Douglas Esson, DVM, Diplomate, ACVO is a Board-certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist at VEI Anaheim (formerly known as Veterinary Ophthalmic Consulting).

His many areas of interest and expertise include corneal surgery, high-risk cataract surgery, the management of glaucoma, exotic animal ophthalmology, clinical research, and the developing field of telemedicine.

Dr. Esson has trained veterinary students, general veterinarians, interns, residents, and ophthalmologists including industry and biotech professionals. His scientific manuscripts have been published in peer-reviewed journals including Veterinary OphthalmologyThe Journal of Glaucoma, The Journal of Science, The Journal of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and The Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. He has authored texts including sections in Veterinary OphthalmologyGlaucoma, and Veterinary Ophthalmic Surgery as well as his own “Clinical Atlas of Canine & Feline Ophthalmic Disease”. Dr. Esson has also presented his research and clinical studies at ACVO, ECVO, ESVO, WSAVA, ARVO, AGS & AAO and is a consultant ophthalmologist with the Comparative Ophthalmic Research Laboratories (CORL) of Wisconsin & New World Medical (California), a member of the University of Florida’s Center for Vision Research and an associate member of the American Glaucoma Society (AGS).

Dr. Esson is well known in the Southern California veterinary community where he has practiced and worked closely with the profession for over ten years. He regularly teaches and hosts wet labs and his volunteer work with wildlife has appeared in numerous publications and syndicated television shows. He is involved with multiple conservation organizations and projects and is also A regularly invited international speaker.

In his free time, Dr. Esson enjoys spending time with his wife Dr. Sara Calvarese. Dr. Esson & Dr. Calvarese met during their surgical training at the Magrane Science Course and share a love of science, ophthalmology, and animals of all kinds.
